Academic Editing
What do you do?
My editing includes a line-by-line review of your writing as well as a holistic look at the format and organization of your manuscript or dissertation. This includes accounting for all of your references--making sure that what's cited in the text is cited on the reference list and vice versa--as well as ensuring that each of those references is formatted according to 6th Edition APA requirements. I typically work with the comment feature in Word, tracking changes for the author's benefit. I'll correct anything that is objectively wrong (e.g., a misspelled word or a heading that's at the wrong level) and then leave a comment to draw your attention to anything that's ambiguous so that you can decide how to handle it. An example would be if you've written a sentence that could be interpreted more than one way, I might leave a comment like: "As written, this implies ____. If that's what you mean, a clearer way to say it would be ____." Or, I might ask a leading question to help you clarify your intent: "Is this the same idea from paragraph one? Consider using consistent terminology so your reader can more easily follow your argument." You should plan to spend at least a little time after receiving your edited manuscript going through the changes/comments to decide which to accept and how to address any comments that require your attention.
How long does it take?
Generally speaking, 6-8 pp./hour for a double-spaced document with 12 pt. font and 1 inch margins. Light edits take less time; extensive edits take longer. Plan on a turnaround time of 1-2 weeks for a dissertation and less than a week for journal articles, book chapters, and shorter manuscripts. Email me to check for availability.
How much does it cost?
$45/hour. Half of expected cost paid upfront as a deposit before work begins; balance due upon completion. Email me for a free quote.
What do former clients say about the results?
"[My defense] went really well and not one comment about APA or overall formatting so thank you for your thorough work."
"Your editing is exactly what I need and had in mind....I really appreciate your attention to detail and your thoroughness. You have been so helpful!!"
